It was truly inspiring to attend Ivan’s Shodō workshop at SESC Consolação. Contemplation and presence defined this blessed day. His work and teachings continue to resonate with me. Thank you, Sensei!
About Ivan
Ivan Melo is a calligrapher, musician, and practitioner of traditional Japanese arts. He is a senior Aikido instructor at Aikido of London, and co-founder of Aikido Gyodokan in London, where he teaches Aikido, weapons, Iaido, and zazen. A Zen practitioner in the lineage of Nishijima Roshi and a Master’s student in Buddhist Studies at SOAS, his calligraphy developed through study with teachers in Japan, the US, and the UK. Since then, he has cultivated an artistic practice rooted in traditional shodō, with a particular focus on the spirit and language of martial arts. His works are held in dojos around the world, including in Brazil at Seimeikan (São Paulo) and Kisshu Busshin (Campinas), among others.
What a privilege it was to learn from, spend time with, listen to, observe, and share moments with Ivan Melo Sensei of Gyodokan- a remarkable artist and educator.
He is someone who is deeply passionate about the disciplines he practises and teaches. Both on and off the tatami, he not only embodies that passion but also offers generosity and empathy, along with wisdom of remarkable depth. Through his technical skill and his presence, and through his contagious joy and grace, he leaves a lasting impression on everyone around him.
Workshop Testimonials
My experience at Ivan’s Shodō workshop was deeply thought-provoking. In terms of its intention, it felt similar to a yoga practice, yet approached from an entirely different perspective.
It was a truly meaningful experience. I still keep the piece of art I created there, and I always find it fascinating to look at.
